The perfect nursing bra? You'll find it here! Many women wear the wrong bra size, and especially during pregnancy, uncertainty grows about which nursing bra size is right, how many maternity bras you need, how long you can wear them, and what a nursing bra even is and how it works. But don't panic. We're here to help! In our shopping guide, " How do I find my perfect nursing bra? ", we explain exactly what to look for when buying a maternity and nursing bra and which models we recommend.
First of all: A good nursing bra is essential and incredibly important. Maternity and nursing bras provide the necessary support, are extremely comfortable, and make breastfeeding super easy. They also help prevent stretch marks, and your breasts will quickly return to their pre-pregnancy shape after breastfeeding. However, buying one often raises a few questions. We want to briefly answer the most important ones so you know what to look for when buying your maternity or nursing bra.
You'll probably notice early in your pregnancy that your bra no longer fits properly and pinches. That's why it's important to choose the right size when buying your maternity or nursing bra. To do this, first measure the circumference directly under your bust and then measure your bust itself. Please make sure the measuring tape lies flat across your back and is loose. Using these measurements, you can then easily find your maternity bra size in our size chart.
When trying on your nursing bra, make sure the underwire doesn't sit on your breast. If it does, the cup is too small and/or the band is too loose. The underwire should rest on your ribs. The band should also always run horizontally across your back. If it doesn't, the band size is too large. If you then choose a nursing or maternity bra with a smaller band size, keep in mind that you might need a larger cup size!
When choosing a maternity bra, make sure it can be fastened on the tightest hook. This allows your maternity bra to comfortably grow with your ribcage, which will expand in the coming months. The straps shouldn't dig in, and the cups shouldn't compress your sensitive breasts.
After giving birth, your ribcage will gradually return to its pre-pregnancy size. For this reason, it's recommended that you buy a nursing bra that fastens with one of the longer hooks. The cups should still have enough room to easily insert a nursing pad. If you're already considering a nursing bra towards the end of your pregnancy, you should also keep your milk coming in in mind when choosing the cup size. It's therefore advisable to leave enough room and choose a cup size larger. As you can see, determining the right size for a nursing or maternity bra isn't so difficult when you know what to look for!
Besides the size of your nursing bra, there are three other criteria you should consider when buying a nursing bra or nursing bustier: maximum support, comfort, and ease of use. This is the only way to ensure that your nursing bra provides what you need. Your nursing bra should have clips on the straps, so you can fold down the cup with one hand and access your breast without having to undress completely! This is a huge advantage, especially in public. Special nursing tops and shirts also help, allowing you quick access to your breast. If that still feels too intimate, nursing ponchos can help create a private space for you and your baby while breastfeeding. For nighttime, there are special sleep nursing bras. These have no bothersome clasps or seams, so you can sleep comfortably in them.
Besides a nursing bra, a special maternity bra is also incredibly practical, and you should ideally switch to one at the beginning of your pregnancy. They are usually made of comfortable cotton or microfiber, have wider straps, and are more easily adjustable thanks to additional hooks. This provides greater comfort and relieves strain on your back.
